What are Acne Scars?
When acne develops, the skin's pores become clogged with excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria, leading to inflammation. The body responds by sending white blood cells to the affected area to fight off the infection, resulting in the formation of pus and the destruction of healthy tissue. Acne scars are typically caused when the injured skin does not repair itself with the same building blocks (proteins) as normal, healthy skin. The scar can form as an indent in the skin (not enough protein) or it can protrude out from the skin (too much protein). Scars can be dark-colored (too much pigment in the scar tissue) or excessively red (too many blood vessels in the scar tissue).
These variations in protein production affect the way scars form and greatly impact the way they are treated. Each of these different types of scars responds best to certain, specific techniques or technologies. Because of this great diversity, it can be difficult to find a physician or office experienced enough to treat all scar types. Factors Leading to Acne Scar Development
- Inflammatory Acne Inflammatory acne, characterized by red, swollen, and pus-filled pimples (pustules) or cysts, is more likely to lead to scarring than non-inflammatory acne (whiteheads and blackheads).
- Severity of Acne The more severe and prolonged the acne, the higher the likelihood of scarring. Nodular and cystic acne, in particular, are associated with a greater risk of scarring.
- Picking or Squeezing Attempting to pop or squeeze acne lesions can worsen inflammation and damage the skin's deeper layers, increasing the likelihood of scarring.
- Skin Type Individuals with certain skin types, such as those with darker skin tones, may be more prone to developing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots) or keloid scars (raised, thickened scars) after acne.
- Genetics Some individuals are genetically predisposed to scar formation. If you have a family history of acne scarring, you may be more prone to developing scars.
- Age Younger individuals are generally more prone to scar formation because their skin has a more robust inflammatory response.
- Delay in Treatment Delaying or inadequate treatment of acne can allow the condition to worsen, increasing the risk of scarring.
Types of Acne Scars
Ice Pick Scars Deep, narrow, pitted scars. Best treated by TCA CROSS. A surgical procedure called punch excision can also be performed, however, this leaves a surgical scar.
Rolling Scars Broad depressions with a sloping edge. Best treated with subcision. Rolling scars may also benefit from collagen induction (collagen building) with one of our many technologies such as radiofrequency microneedling or Halo.
Boxcar ScarsBroad depressions with sharply defined edges. Best treated with radiofrequency microneedling, laser resurfacing, TCA CROSS and subcision.

What is Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling?
Radiofrequency microneedling works by penetrating into various layers of the skin with tiny needles, which induce an increase in collagen production. What is TCA CROSS?
